PHILLIPS

My paternal Grandmothers name before marriage was Alexandrina Phillips (known as Allie). She resided at Rosedale Terrace, Llwynypia until her marriage to my Grandfather Daniel Powell (who was from Ton Pentre). They moved around to wherever there was work and consequently my Father and some of his siblings were born in England not Wales – but did come back to live in Wales – settling in Cardiff.  My Father Brian Powell passed away in 2004 (he lived in Australia).  There are only a couple of living family that I know of, and nobody appears to have the information I am looking for.

Alexandrina was born to Sarah Mary (Howell)and Thomas Cynwell Phillips in 1901  – Sarah died in Cardiff in 1955 but her interment record shows Rosedale Terrace as being her home address, Thomas died in 1926 at Llwynypia Cottage hospital – Alexandrina, Sarah and Thomas are all buried at Trealaw Cemetery. Alexandrina (Allie) had six other siblings plus an adopted sister they were:

Lewis Ungoed Phillips, born 1894, married Elsie Collins Aug 1919 at St Andrews Church – they had two children that I know of who were called Thomas born in 1920 and David born in 1922.

David Cynwell Phillips, born 1895, married Mary Lewis Sep 1928 Chapel Gelli

Thomas Pace Phillips, born 1899, married Gladys Tucker Aug 1926 St Davids Church

Cordelia Phillips, born 1905, married Ernest Aylieff 1928 Marylebone, London – she died in 1931

Nancy Phillips, born 1906 died 1907

Llewellyn Royston Phillips, born 1909 married Agnes Cullinane Sept 1933, Edgeware, London

Adopted sister Catherine Sparrow, born 1892 in Daws Point, Sydney, Australia

My parents divorced when I was young, and consequently I have had very little contact with my Fathers family (though I was in contact with him in his latter years) and so basically I am trying to find any living relatives who would be descendents of Alexandrina’s siblings – just to try and fill in the gaps, for example I know that Lewis and David joined the colours but have no idea what regiment they were in.  For many months I struggled to find how Catherine Sparrow fitted into the tree but then discovered she was actually the daughter of Charlotte Howell, Sarah's sister, and Charlotte had died and the children were adopted out.

Here is a photo of the family that was apparently taken at Rosedale Terrace in 1914.

If anybody has any information whatsoever regarding either the Phillips (or Sparrows) originally from Llwynypia please could you contact me.

PHILLIPS

Howard Harry Phillips - Born 3rd January 1912  - Lived in Howard Street, Treorchy.

Deceased 22nd February 1996  age 84 (Bournemouth Hospital Dorset) Home address at the time :- Christchurch, Dorset - from the early fifties to 1996.

Hi,

I am trying to find, if at all possible, any information relating to my Adoptive late father who lived in Treorchy as a child.  I believe the family lived in Howard Street, the reason he was named Howard. He was later affectionately known as Howie by those close to him.

He was one of 12 surviving children, (there had been 14 originally. His brothers were called, Gus, Frank, Walt, George, Stan and Lewis Phillips. His sisters were, Gertie, Alma, Olive, Eva and Ida.

I have no idea what his parents,  were called and never met either of them as they passed away before I was born. I only ever saw the odd photo of them.

Dad was the soul survivor before he passed away on 22nd February 1996.  I was then unable to locate many of his family photographs, that I had seen over the years, as they mysteriously disappeared from his loft, where he kept some of them in storage.  He was not in the best of health the last year or so of his life. and became a little disorientated. He may have accidentally disposed of these treasured memories. He also gave a whole album of photos, to his late brother Gus's son, Frank Phillips on a loan basis, but as far as I am aware these were never returned.

I am not sure how long the Phillips family resided in Treorchy, and when the last member of the family moved  away from the area, but I can say that they moved to various places including Bournemouth in Dorset, Trowbridge in Wiltshire, Melksham in Wiltshire, Weston-Super-Mare, Nr. Somerset. My father eventually moved to Christchurch in Dorset, I believe between 1945 - 1950, where he remained until his death in 1996, at the age of 84.

During his working life he worked as an apprentice mechanic in a garage, although I am not sure where exactly. Then he worked at Battersea Power Station in London for a period of time, again I am uncertain of the time period.

Dad then served in the Navy during world war two as a Petty Officer  on board an Aircraft Carrier, (he was a Fitter).  Only him and the First Officer survived after the ship was bombed and sunk.

After the end of the war he commenced work  for the M.O.D. at  M.E.X.E. in Christchurch, Dorset, again as a Fitter. The name of this Ministry base changed over the years, and finally became M.V.E.E. (Ministry Vehicles Engineering Establishment).  Dad retired in January 1977 after 27 years service with the M.O.D.

He was married to Margaret Ellen Carr, who sadly passed away in 1967 from Cancer. They were unable to have children of their own and therefore adopted me and my sister Sheila. I am 49 and reside in Bournemouth, Dorset with my second husband Mike Clark. My maiden name was Sylvia Jean Phillips, and Dad was 48 at the time of adopting me as a baby.

I have attached a few Pictures.......

In the middle of the front row is Phillips Senior the Grandad I never met with his seven sons. I do not know his or his wife's name.

My Dad - Howard Harry Phillips is in the  back row, second from the right. To the right of him is George and to his left is Gus.

The other sons  are in no particular order as I am not sure who is who. However their names are:- Stan - Walt - Frank and Lewis Phillips.

Sadly I don't have a picture of all five sisters together,  in fact hardly any pictures of the sisters what so ever.

There were pictures of my Grandmother in the photo Album that Dad had in his loft, but as said earlier I have lost any hope of retrieving that sadly.

Dad  Howard Harry Phillips as a young man - Date Unknown.

Dad in his uniform, possibly Naval uniform (Not a good picture, but all I have)

Dad with one of his sisters in Treorchy - again I am  not sure of date.

Another picture of Dad Phillips with one of his sisters in Treorchy -

Sorry - Date unknown.

Dad -  Howard Harry Phillips in 1987 age (75) at my home -  which was in Frome, Somerset, at the time.

Dad (Howard Phillips) had a long term childhood friend called Dave Richards or Dai as he was affectionately called. He was also from Treorchy. They remained friends into their senior years. The last time they met was at Dads 80th birthday party, given by my sister Sheila at her home in Bournemouth in 1992. This was a wonderful occasion enjoyed by everyone at the celebration, myself included. Sadly Dai (Dave Richards) is as far as I am aware no longer alive. He had a son Keith Richards, but I have not seen him since I was a child and have no idea where he is.

I would be very grateful if anyone has any information or pictures that they are willing and able to share with me. I know it's a long shot, but really I have few options left. The only surviving relative of the Phillips family still living that I can contact is a Cousin called Terry Carthew, who is the Daughter of Eva Phillips, one of Dad's sisters. Terry lives in Weston-Super-Mare. She is a lovely lady and I intend to contact her and her husband Stan.

Any help will be very appreciated,

Many thanks,

Mrs Sylvia Clark (Formally Miss Sylvia Jean Phillips)

PAGE

I am researching the following names.  PAGE, BECKINGHAM, LEWIS, DAVIES, FRANCIS  If possible I would like to make contact with family members who may still be living in that area.

My great grandfather BENJAMIN PAGE was buried April 07, 1909 in Treorchy Cemetery. He was born in 1830 in Ludlow, Shropshire, son of Francis Page, Printer.

His wife Elizabeth Page was bap. 1829 and died after 1901 (1901 census Elan Village) location unknown. They had two daughters and a son.

Their daughters were Elizabeth Drew (nee Page) and Margaret Beckingham (nee Page) - who were married on the same day in February 1883.

  • My grandmother was Elizabeth Page (above) who married my grandfather John Drew of Devon.  John was working in Llanwynn? at the Lake Vyrny? dam and met my mother and married in Feb 1883.  Both John and Elizabeth died in Keewatin, Ontario, Canada.
  • Her sister Margaret married Henry Alfred Beckingham on the same day in Feb 1883 (Margaret was buried beside her father Benjamin Page in Treorchy on Dec 29, 1932.)

Their son John Page married Sarah Beckingham and died Caerphilly, Glamorgan in 1933.  I am not sure where Sarah b. 1865 died, possibly Caerphilly also.

John and Sarah had the following children: Elizabeth b. 1884 ; John (Jack) b. 1885; Esther b. 1887  married Ernest Davies; Benjamin b. 1889 married Gladys Francis; Harry b. 1891 ; Hilda b. 1893 married Thomas Lewis; Isabella b. 1895 married Thomas Jones; Frank b. 1898 married Rose Millett.; Margaret b. 1900

The details I have for them are as follows:

  • John Page b. 1885 lived in Treherbert, Wales.  He died November 01 1962 and is buried in the Treorchy cemetery also.

Hilda PAGE (19) married Thomas LEWIS (23) in 1911 Registrar office, Pontypridd.  Thomas Lewis's father was John Lewis, farmer.  Hilda's father was John Page.  Thomas residence at time of marriage was at Gillihirion farm, Upper Boat.

Isabella PAGE (19) married Thomas JONES (26) in 1912 Parish Church of Eglwysilan.  Thomas's father was Thomas Jones, Miner.  Isabella's father was John Page.  Thomas lived in Treford and Isabella lived in Nantgarw.

24th March 2008 - (updated 4th September 2008)

I wonder if you can help me? I am researching the Mitchell, Phillips and Parry family connections with me in Brook Street, Blaenrhondda.

My Uncle Ednyfed Jones, died at 88 Brook Street, Blaenrhondda on 21/11/1962. (Informant :- Thomas Joseph Phillips, (nephew) of 78, Brook Street.)

His wife Hannah Mary Jones (nee Mitchell) was born in Blaenrhondda  14/02/1899 and died there 11/04/1974. (Informant :- Edwin Charles Parry (grandson) of the same address)

All I would like is a photo of Ednyfed and his wife in later life, as I only have a poor copy of him aged 22yrs at his Dad's funeral in 1919.

My uncle Ednyfed's wife Hannah Mary Mitchell and her family show up in the 1901 census returns for Treherbert, (in the parish of Ystradyfodwg) at 36 Caroline Street, (Blaenrhondda), Treherbert lived

Alf Mitchell - Head - aged 39 years.

Annie Mitchell - Wife - aged 35 years.

James Mitchell - son - aged 16 years.

M J Mitchell - son - aged 15 years.

Unice Mitchell - daughter - aged 12 years.

Elena Mitchell - daughter - aged 8 years.

Albert Mitchell - son - aged 7 years.

HANNAH MITCHELL - daughter - aged 3 years.

Annie Mitchell - daughter = aged 8 months.

Hannah's nephew Thomas Joseph Phillips, lived at 78, Brook Street, Blaenrhondda, and it is with him, or any descendants of Hannah Mitchell who I would like to get in touch with also.. I understand that some may possibly be living somewhere nearby in Tynewydd.

With living 250 miles away, I am not in a position to  personally carry out research. I have been a member of Glam. F.H Society for 8 years, and you can imagine how futile at times, tracing the Jones family tree can be...

Checking through some of my earlier research papers, we have more links with Blaenrhondda than I thought...

1881 Census :- My Great Grandfather, and 5 children lived at 19 Brook Street

1891 Census :- My Great Grandfather, and 8 children lived at 72 Brook Street

I think he then moved to Blaenavon, as listed in the 1901 Census.

(My Grandmother, who was born in Coedely, was one of 20, but only 15 survived past the age of 5yrs)

You have a terrific website.

Thanks

PRICE

Greetings - Just trying to find some of my family.

My Grandfather was one of 7brawds (brothers), also had 7 sisters.

He moved from Pentre about 1905 to live in the Afan valley (Cymmer).

All the old family have now died, but I am wondering how can I get in touch with any of the Price family.

Got an old picture taken about 1904 with about 56 of the family on it, it was taken in Treorchy school.

If any one shares the name Price, or has the same photo can you please get in touch.

Any info will be a help to me. Yours sincerely. Allan Price
