This year the Ystradyfodwg Art Society will be celebrating its 39th Annual Art Exhibition at the Parc & Dare Hall, Treorchy during the week beginning Sunday 6th July. On Monday, 7th, we open in the evening for invited guests who will include our sponsors, previous purchasers of our paintings and friends and helpers of the Society. The doors will be open to the public from 10am until 9pm from Tuesday the 8th and the exhibition will close at 4pm on Saturday the 12th.  With approximately 200 paintings on show this annual week-long event at the Parc & Dare has been running for many years and it has now become an established part of the arts scene in the Rhondda

.  Visitors are often surprised and pleased by the quality and variety of the paintings on show so that many of our works now hang in homes all over the world.  Some of our artists even have faithful followers who look forward to purchasing their newest work and are eager to see their latest efforts.  We have quite a few long serving members who have shown their work for many years and their enthusiasm and commitment to the Ystradyfodwg has been wonderful.  To keep any organisation, such as ours, running for this long takes many long hours of work that can not be seen and is not rewarded financially; the true reward is the enjoyment one receives.  We have been fortunate over the years to have attracted new members regularly and it is a pleasure to see the progress of these new ‘artists’, a name we all feel a little uncertain about when it relates to oneself, but that is what you are if you do attempt to create a work of art.  The pleasure of actually selling one’s first painting is hard to describe, someone you don’t know has rewarded you by paying money for something that you have created. That first sale is something no artist will forget.

If you think you would like to become one of our group it costs nothing to try, you will pay only £1.00 per visit and if you decide that you like what we do then there is a small annual fee which is payable in January each year. Call in on one of our studio sessions: Monday and Thursday mornings 10am to 12 noon or Monday or Wednesday evening 7pm to 9pm.  Someone will show you the ropes and there always a cuppa at half times to get to know the rest of us.

On Thursday of exhibition week we have in recent years linked up with Treorchy Comprehensive School to put on a display of the current work of the students.  Some amazing works have been seen created by the children of our locality.  Many of the students go on to University to continue with their art studies and hopefully to spend a lifetime involved in something they love.  To encourage the students our Society has provided prizes to be awarded, on the judgement of the School’s Art Dept., to one student from each of seven year groups and one overall winner prize.  This award ceremony is performed after school on the Thursday of our week and is well attended by parents and families of the winners. It is a privilege to see our young people in a new light and the children enjoy it also, they get a cash prize to go home with which always lights up their faces.

Recently one of our Society’s founders members, Mrs. Mary Davies, passed away and will be sorely missed, our heartfelt feeling go out to her family.  Although she had not attended the studio for quite some time due to her frail health she was still interested in all that went on.  She was a very popular and loved member of our group, well known for her beautiful oil paintings of flowers, as she was one of the founders of something that we all now take for granted we felt that we wanted to mark her passing in some way.  We decided that this year’s exhibition should be dedicated to her memory. our exhibition memmorobilia related to her and her work will form a part of the work on show.  Thanks go to Mary and each of those few who created our Society all those years ago.
